Do You Know a "Smart Phraser" circa Sandra Bernhard
Have you ever noticed there are some people in the world that when they say ANYTHING it just sounds important? They can be speaking or writing or Facebooking about ABSOLUTELY NOTHING it is somehow sounds like they are speaking about foreign politics and the importance of nuclear energy and the environment and all they said was how Journey is a good band and why. How do they do that?
I read this one girl's Facebook entries and it never fails that anything she writes magically becomes this encrypted garble of insidious soliloquies, and no, I don't even know if I just said anything there.
Problem with this is whenever I read her "stuff" I instantly wonder if anyone else finds what she writes to be an exercise in the abilities of the thesaurus? I wonder if anyone else suddenly feels "less than" in the presence of her unabridged use of the English language? Can't she just say, "Journey is a great band." Oh, noooo, she must say something that makes me feel like I should be looking deeper into the past, present and hidden messages in all Journey songs.
She writes about people I've never heard of over and over and over...how does she know about such people? It is like going to a Sandra Bernhard comedy show. I never know what the hell she is talking about either? Where do these people get their information? What news are they watching? What books are they reading? What sub-counter-culture do they belong to that they have all this crazy information that I HAVE NEVER EVEN REMOTELY HEARD OF?!?!
And then there are their followers that "seem" to understand what they are speaking of! Is there some weird newspaper these people all read that have these obscure references explained. Is there some group that is privy to such information? Why am I not in on this? Why I am so out of the loop that I ACTUALLY HAVE TO FAST FORWARD Sandra Bernhard's piece on Watch What Happens Live on Bravo because Jim and I have no CLUE WHAT THE HELL SHE IS TALKING ABOUT?!?!
And let me tell you, I am not speaking about when she is speaking Hebrew...I KNOW what she is saying there most times...I am talking about her rants and references that make her jokes funny. No clue..Zero...fast forward.
Perhaps I am just out of the cool-girls circle? Perhaps I am just in the mainstream so deeply that when someone references anything outside of Millionaire Matchmaker or The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills I am outside of my comfort zone? But I don't think so. I think it is the WAY that they "speak," they way that they phrase things...kinda like Yoda.
Perhaps I will crack their "smart person" code of Phrasing, perhaps not. Until then I will continue to gaze admiringly at her Facebook postings, fast forward through Sandra's monologue and nod quietly at all the "smart phrasers" but you and I will both know...I have NO CLUE what they are saying.
