World's dumbest Criminals...I vote "yes!"

So I got wiped out!  I went shopping with Skylar for school clothes and for the first time in my life my credit card was declined at the store.  Problem was, I knew that when I left that morning I had plenty of money in my account.  Problem was, I didn't spend all the money in the account.  So I handed the cashier another card and RAN out of the store to check my account balance on my smart phone (see mom, there is a good reason to own a smart phone!?)

As I got to the page that shows all my balances, I see that my account now has $13.00 as the total?! And as my brain quickly adds up our purchases from Hollister and lunch, I am already clicking over to the page that shows what exactly I have spent all this money on.

My eyes run down the page to SPRINT, Dish Network, Hotel, Hotel, Court Costs....HUH?

What the heck is Jim doing? Why would he use my card? Why is he buying....Holy crap, I've been hacked!!!!

I quickly call Jim who is in a meeting at work..(don't care)...and interrupt him with the news..."they've wiped us out! They have stolen about a thousand dollars! quick call the bank!"  I tell him to sign into our account and point out the charges that I haven't made.  Skylar, Emersyn and Brock are with me and we aren't necessarily done shopping but with all of this chaos, I am now completely wiped out...literally.

Jim calls the bank and they close my bank card.  Since I STILL HAVE THE CARD, it seems that they just stole the number and had been charging things on the Internet.

So here goes.  What these pieces of crap do is copy your credit card somehow.  They do this when you are making a purchase and you don't see them do it.  Then they copy/make a new card with your information OR they just use the information from your card to make purchases on the Internet.

Because they copied my bank account credit card I quickly realized that something was wrong.  Most times an actual credit card is stolen and it is months before the card owner realizes that are being robbed. Fortunately, THAT morning I had transferred money out of my account and into Jim's account.  Fortunately, I have our bank accounts split up into "Jim's money" and "Meredyth's money" and "Bill's money."  This way we have NOTHING attached to Bill's money but online banking.  So when they charged everything out of my account, they didn't get to our savings or any other account!  Had ALL our accounts been one, they would have gotten it all.  Jerks...

Fortunately, banks insure our money so I will be getting back every penny.  Unfortunately, I was told that unless I file a police report they don't even look for the thieves.  All they do is contact the merchant that the charge was made with, and attempt to get my money from them.

Yes... NOBODY IS LOOKING FOR THE BAD GUY...NOBODY!

I've heard people say to not use a "debit" card, but I must say after this experience, my debit card has served me well.  I am getting all my money back, they already transferred $1300 into my account until the "case" is finalized and because it was my checking account, I realized there was a problem immediately.  Had it been my American Express or another Visa, I wouldn't have realized anything was wrong until I received the statement in the mail!

I am going to file a police report.  I don't have to, but if I don't nobody will look for the bad guy.  I don't suspect that anyone is going to really care about $1300, but it is important to me that I didn't just let them get away with a crime.  I am hoping they find these dummies as they charged a cell phone, Dish Network, and COURT COSTS!! No, I am not kidding.  These morons charged their court costs on a stolen credit card.  World's dumbest criminals...I vote "yes!"
