Deciding to be "Irresponsible"

Yesterday on International House Hunters on HGTV, there was a family from the Midwest whom decided to move to St. Croix and open a gas station.  They had two small children and were looking for a home to buy.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THAT! Who gets to do THAT??!! I wanna move to a beautiful island and open a flip flop business, but nobody takes me seriously? THEY did it, why can't WE?

I often have this conversation with Jim.  I often wonder why in the world we live in a place that is 90 degrees and hot in summer, such that you can't sit outside, and then snows 3 feet in 24 hours in the winter, such that you can't go outside.  What gives?  Why do we subject ourselves to this when there are perfectly sane people out there moving their families to St. Croix!!!

I talked to a woman the other day at the pool and she was saying how whenever her or her husband leave New Jersey they always discuss "why don't we live....here?"  Jim and I do the exact same thing.  When we go to South Carolina or New York, or anywhere, we always ask ourselves...."why don't we live here?"

What is it about the safety of the present that makes us so afraid to let go and just try something new.  Yes, yes, yes, he has a great job and those are pretty scarce these days, but he is a sales guy, he can sell anything, anywhere...so why doesn't he?  I'm thinking St. Thomas?

But then there are the kids and school...we can figure it out.  And then there is our family...we never see them anyway.  But then ....wait, there isn't any other objection is there?  Let's do this!

Perhaps it is just a matter of throwing caution to the wind and just doing it.  Perhaps the family on HGTV is the exception to sanity and what makes this country ....and world, go 'round.  I mean if every single person that thought..."why don't we live here" actually did it, nobody would ever live in North Dakota, (kidding).  But seriously, it is all of us nervous, level-headed, responsible adults working to attain the American dream that keeps this county afloat.  If it weren't for us, we would all be living on the shores of some Caribbean island somewhere.

Ok, call me irresponsible, I need to find a Vespa shack to work out of, my butt is moving to an island!!!
