The Doctor Was Wrong at Every Turn...Scary

I appreciate doctors.  I am amazed at the schooling they must "endure" and the cases they must attempt to make well...however, they are to be included in the human race and therefore make mistakes.

I took Brock to the doctor's to discuss the constant barfing.  I explained how he guzzles, gulps and gasps when beginning breastfeeding.  I explained the dark-green, seedy poop.  I explained the gas.  I explained how when he starts eating it sounds like the milk is hitting an empty barrel.  He was weighed and has gained two times what he should have gained.

And this is what the doctor said/did:

*  She said I should give him Zantac 2x a day in case it is reflux
*  She said I should feed him every 3 hours for 20 minutes
*  She said he is just a hungry kid and that is why he is gaining and eating so much
*  She said to feed him on each side for 10 minutes
*  She said the color of the poop does NOT matter.

NONE OF THAT IS CORRECT...NONE OF IT!!!

This is the reality and is a textbook case of the fore milk/hind milk breastfeeding issue.

*  If the baby only gets the fore milk (the sugar milk that is in the beginning of eating)... the baby gets:
- stomach upsetting "sugar milk" or the soup, which causes spitting up
- milk that does not "stick to the ribs" i.e. very hungry baby
- milk that causes 2x the weight gain,
- milk that goes right through the baby and thus causes the stomach to empty, and
- Dark green seedy poop.

Hellooooo!!!

So what should be done is to feed the baby on one side OVER AND OVER again until the baby can get the fatty (cheesecake), rib-sticking, calming, stomach-settling, yellow-poop producing HIND MILK.

I should feed him as often as he wants BUT only on the one side for a few hours a day until my body calms the milk production and this will happen faster if I only feed on the one side.  So one side for 5 or so hours, then the other for 5, etc.

He will feel FULL with the Hind Milk.  He will not be gassy with the Hind Milk.  He will not barf the Hind Milk.  He will gain normal weight with the Hind Milk.  He won't have to take the Zantac (hopefully) with the Hind Milk.  He will have normal yellow poop with the Hind Milk.  He will be a settled, happy baby with the Hind Milk.

She was wrong on each and every point.  Scary.

I am not suggesting to not listen to doctors, but I am saying that they don't know everything.  I am saying to do your research and to not take ANY ONE'S advice, word, opinion as fact.  As parents we need to listen to our children, babies and ourselves.  We need to trust our hearts and instincts and believe in that sixth sense that says..."some thing's not right."

I hope this will help Brock be well.  I hope this is the answer that we have been looking for, for the last few weeks.  But I think we are on our way as he is sitting by himself in his chair right now and THAT hasn't happened yet!

  1. Doctors don't know everything. Just because they graduated medical school doesn't make them smart. Lucky for Brock he has a smart mama. Good luck to you guys. I hope everything works out.
