Calling The Border Patrol on the Cleaning Lady

I use to have three cleaning ladies come and clean the house every other Thursday.  They spoke Spanish and from their accent and dark features, I can only assume they were all Mexican.  They showed up as scheduled each and every time, didn't break anything and when I can home the house was perfectly clean.  A job well done.

Carmen called me a while back and told me that she was going to have to quit because of acquired allergies, and she was having a bad reaction to cleaning products.

So the other day Cody asked me if I would ever turn Carmen and the ladies in as illegal aliens.  I told him "no."  He asked, "why not?  If they are breaking the law, and not suppose to be here, why wouldn't you tell on them?"  He makes a good point.  If I KNOW they are breaking the law, why don't I turn them in?

Well, first of all, I don't have ANY clue if they are citizens or not.  Just because someone shows up at my door to offer their services and doesn't speak perfect English does NOT mean that they are an illegal alien.  And second, I just don't know if it is my place?  Or is it?  Is one suppose to check some one's credentials if they are to hire them to do a job?  Should I hear some one's accent and automatically assume they are here illegally?  If I see dark skin, or light skin or curly red hair, do I just assume they aren't an American citizen?

What do we use as parameters for judging citizenship?  My aunt is as dark as my coffee table and she is as Irish as they come.  So I guess I can't go by skin color.  My dad speaks Spanish but I know he is a citizen...I think?  But wait a minute, there is that mom and son team at gymnastics and she only speaks Russian to the little boy, do I call The Border Patrol on those two law breakers?  Do I ask for their papers?

I understand that everyone has a different view on the legality and permissibility of illegal aliens in our Country, but, just a few short generations ago we were all allowed to enter this country as the boat landed.  Would our grandparents be "illegal" today?  As I've heard it,  they checked our ancestors teeth, signed 'em in, changed their last names up a bit and "bam" they were American citizens.

I've hear the comments "well, they don't have the proper vaccinations!! They are bringing in illnesses!!"  But, I have a very American friend who has NEVER had a vaccination in her life, and nobody is kicking her out of the country!?  Or the taxes argument, "they don't pay the proper taxes but get all of the benefits of THIS country."  Well, ok, so do many AMERICANS.  And the only taxes they AREN'T paying is income tax, and we can look at the AMERICAN business owners for their responsibility in that.

My sister runs a hotel in San Diego, California.  She has a cleaning woman who is 23 years old.  This woman rids a bus three hours each way every day to come and clean hotel rooms for $2.50 per room.  She has four or five kids and just finished building a three ROOM cinder block home in Mexico for her family.  She works her butt off for pennies.  I would rather have a woman like her in "my" country, WORKING, than an American citizen, not working, not paying income taxes and collecting welfare, health care and subsidized housing.  There are plenty of American citizens draining our country of resources, draining our country of its taxes and breaking the law.

So no, I won't be turning Carmen in anytime soon.  I won't be trying to figure out if her or the lawn care guys or the Russians at gymnastics are American citizens anytime soon.  I guess I just have better things to do.  I guess I just don't feel that it is my responsibility to "take 'em down" and call the authorities on these people that "appear" to not be American.  I mean honestly, I don't want anyone doing this to me or my family.  I have been mistaken for being from Norway before and I'm not walking around with my "papers" either?  I hope nobody turns me in!!
