Jesus and Gay Marriage

The other day Cody asked me about my views on gay marriage.  He was doing a school project to argue one side of a case.  He already has his side and opinion decided but wanted to hear what I had to say.  This is what I told him...more or less...

"I would never want anyone telling me who I can and can't love.  I would never want anyone to tell me who I could or couldn't marry, and I don't think it is right that just because I fit into the "norm" of our society, I should be passing judgement as to who should or should not be allowed to marry.  Marriage is only a word, like flower, planet or fruit, and as we evolve as people and as a society, our views and definitions should evolve as well.

We should never place ourselves in a position where we feel that we are the "all knowing" or "correct."  What we should do, is realize that all people, homosexuals, Catholics, men, women, children, Hindus, heterosexuals should be allowed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and it should not only be in the context of, "as long as it suits what makes "me" happy."

We should never stand on a platform and look down on anyone and tell them that they should do it "our" way, if it isn't hurting anyone.  We should never take what we are doing and judge the world according to OUR beliefs, likes and physical and mental make up.  What if one day we woke up and the gay community was making the laws, would you want them to tell the heterosexuals that we AREN'T ALLOWED to get married?  Then how is it EVER right for us to tell them they aren't allowed? Who are we?"

So then we turn to the religious view of "right and wrong" according to God and the Bible and all that is wholly....

So in the Ten Commandments God never once mentions being gay as a bad thing.  He does however list being jealous, using God's name in vain and lying.  So to the "though shall not lie with another...." Yeah, it is in the Bible, BUT, so are so many other things that you and I do every day.  "ohhh, I sure like those shoes she has." Or, "nope, those jeans don't make you look fat at all!" Jealously and a lie, each one a Commandments that God sent down for us to follow.  Oh and he also mentioned in the Bible that we are not to masturbate either..."thou shall not spill thy seed."  Yeah, let's not forget that little number.  So as far as homosexuality goes, lets not pick and choose according to our agenda.  Yes, we should, if we are Christians or Jews, attempt to follow God's laws and strive to be "good,"  but the fact is, we all fall short, and it is not our place to stand and judge by picking which laws, sins and abominations fit our argument of the day.

So as a society...

Any time we organize our citizens to move away from instability and move towards a life of family, health and living a longer, more productive life, we are improving out society as a whole.  For example, we do not as a society continue to rock out at frat houses well into our 40s, we mature, move on, and work towards a lifestyle of family, career, a spouse and maybe children.  Why would we EVER want any part of our society to not be allowed to move in the same direction?  Why would we EVER want any part of our society to be forced to live in a world where singles bars, instability and being forced to live a societal taboo lifestyle as the ONLY way of life?  Wouldn't we want all of society to be allowed the same growth, the same stability of marriage and family that we enjoy as heterosexuals!

When we grow as an individual, when we grow as a group, we then are able to grow as a society.

So no, tomorrow I don't want anyone telling me who I can or cannot marry.  Tomorrow I don't want to wake up and be on the "other" side of "the powers that be."  I don't want anyone telling me that although I am not affecting any one's life, I am not allowed to pursue happiness as an intelligent, independent, law-abiding citizen.  So, I don't plan on doing that to anyone else.  Jesus gave communion to Judas and did not judge the man who betrayed him and thus who consequently led to Jesus' death.  If the person who we as turn to as an excuse to judge homosexuality, can forgive, love and not judge his fellow brother, then we should not use Jesus as OUR excuse to judge anyone either.
