Sometimes You Just Need A Friend

Yesterday Skylar went to visit her friend that has been sick.  Her friend has been in the hospital until just yesterday and originally, Skylar wanted to go to the hospital for the visit.  Fortunately, the friend came home yesterday and Skylar was able to visit her at home.

When I went to pick Skylar up from her friend's house, the girl's mom came out to talk to me.  She said she was so thankful that Skylar came over and when Skylar walked into the house and hugged her friend, Skylar just broke down into tears.  The mom said she was so touched by Skylar.  The mom said  that the little girl was in so much pain in the morning but when she was around her friends that night, she was beaming.

She then told me how Skylar and the girl had gone ice skating in the past few weeks and how Skylar knew her friend couldn't skate.  The mom told me how amazed she was that Skylar didn't even put on skates, but instead just hung out with her friend the whole time, never thinking of leaving her friend on the sidelines.

So I told the mom, if there is anything we can do for them to please let me know....and her response, "just let Skylar come over."

Wow, what a compliment, but also, how true.  Sometimes you just need a friend to make all the worries and woes of a moment, a situation or a pain, to dissipate.  Some days you just need to hear a voice to completely help you forget the bills need paid or that you and your spouse are fighting.  Sometimes you just need a Skylar.

I am glad that Skylar has compassion and the ability to be selfless with her friends.  She is a strong person with strong ideals, and she is not a doormat.  She does not get taken advantage of and she doesn't do what she doesn't want to do.  She knows what a "mean girl" is and she knows who she is, and at 12, I can't ask for much more.

At times I question my abilities as a parent, who doesn't.  But there are times, like yesterday, when I know I am setting a good example, walking the walk and showing my kids compassion, love and kindness, so I'm doing ok.  Sometimes you just need a Skylar to remind you that all is right in the world, and yesterday, her friend and I were all reminded.
