My Cousin Matt and the Packers!

My cousin, Matt Wilhelm is #57 on the Green Bay Packers.  He played in the Super Bowl last night and they won.  I am filled with happiness for him and his family.  I can't even imagine.

During opening ceremonies I waited to see him run out onto the field, waited to see if he looked up or outwards towards the field and I tried to imagine what kind of a feeling that must be.  I imagined his wife and children looking down and seeing his jersey emerge from the tunnel and I couldn't help but smile.  What a magical moment, what a magical realization of a life-long dream.

There has never been a person from Matt's hometown to ever play in the Super Bowl.  Think off all the kids, all the parents and all the dreams over the years, and Matt is the first to ever play in the Super Bowl, what an amazing accomplishment.

A few years ago he was released from the San Diego Chargers and went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles for five minutes.  He then headed over to the 49ers for a year.  After all of that moving around we didn't know if his very long NFL career was ending.  But then he got picked up by the Packers.  Who knew.

Ever since Brett Favre left the Packers I have been rooting for them, but when Matt joined the team, our family's 2nd favorite team (after the Browns) quickly became the Packers.

Point is, YEAH MATT!  Yeah to hard work and faith.  Yeah to a path followed and a path embraced.  I can't imagine how his family was feeling when he was let go by the Eagles and then the 49ers.  How scary that must have been, but when those doors closed, an even greater door opened.

Matt has been playing in the NFL for eight years.  That is a seriously long football career.  He is a winner and he has embraced change, adversity and the hard work.  Granted, great genes and talent play a part, but Matt, his faith and his family rose to the occasion and came out on top.

Congratulations Matt and family.  Jim, Cody, Skylar, Emersyn and I were cheering the loudest yesterday.  Every time we saw you we yelled "There's Matt!!" And I held my breath at the end praying every prayer for the Packers to win, because I wanted that so very bad for you.  I am proud, I am happy and I am honored to know you and your family.  May this moment be a shining memory for you forever, you deserve it.  It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
