Where's the Fireworks Today?

Today is a Federal Holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday.  Because of said birthday, and the observance of it, I am not upstairs cleaning poop off of Emersyn's legs, since Jim's work is now observing said holiday.  Thank you Martin Luther King, Jr.  I am not sure however, how we are suppose to celebrate, observe or honor Dr. King's birthday?  Is there a parade I can attend or a museum that I am able to visit to learn more?  Who is having a cookout and when are the fireworks?

This is actually the first year that Jim's work has decided to observe this federal holiday.  We are not exactly sure why they did not observe it in the past, nor are we sure why they decided to NOW celebrate, but the fact that he has had a three day weekend is ok with all of us.  Now what to do?

So far on Jim's holiday, he woke up with Emersyn at 6:00 a.m. (she usually gets up at 8:00), made breakfast, fought with Skylar and then raced upstairs as Emersyn was yelling "dada poooooopppp!"  He then proceeded to clean poo off her legs, pj's and then put her in the shower to remove the rest of the poop mess, (what I have come to call a "poop bath").  Even though it is not a bath at all, but it sounds better.

We really need to grocery shop (or go food shopping, that is what they call it in Jersey, hysterical), go to Lowes for a new kitchen faucet, take down Christmas lights, clean the garage, clean the back patio of all the crap we didn't take in before the snow fell, go to Target to get stuff for my work, clean the house and continue to potty train, but NONE of that seems to honor the late, great, Martin Luther King, Jr.?

Silent, peaceful demonstration anyone?

I just feel like there should be SOMETHING? Perhaps later on today we can watch an "E! True Hollywood Story" about him?  Wonder if they have one?  If not the History Channel has to have something?!

Maybe we just need to remember?  Perhaps Dr. King would have just liked us to be glad we are ALL able to be home today to enjoy our families, or our singleness, or the fact that we can all go to the same movie theater and gym.  Perhaps it is not a matter of what we do, but more a matter of what we remember, and how we celebrate the triumphs of our country's fight for equality.

So today I am not going to get all bent out of shape about HOW I celebrate Dr. King's birthday, but THAT I observe.  I am not really sure WHY Jim needs to be home to observe, but I will take it!  Maybe I will make him recite Dr. King's famous "I have a dream" speech to the kids?  Or maybe we can just watch it on the Internet...that seems a little more educational than a white guy in a Brown's sweatshirt?

So thank you Dr. King for everything you have done for me and my country.  Thank you for your sacrifices and your intelligence.  Thank you for being so fearless and so strong, as you have altered the way our country thinks, does, learns, shops, travels, drinks, watches movies, and votes.  And today, in my little house, today I get to have my husband home to help me clean poo and to spend time with his family....lucky Jim.
