But I digress...

So I have done it...I am now officially a "wrestling mom."  It happened yesterday with a simple email to THE WRECKING CREW, and now I am driving three days a week to a supplemental wrestling program for Cody.  This is of course on top of the four day a week school practices and matches that he currently attends.  The thing is, where we live, Cody will be competing against hundreds of kids to make the wrestling team for high school, and if we don't do a sport 150% he won't make a team?!

I came from a small town in Ohio where kids can play a little soccer, a little baseball and try their hand at track or something.  Here, your butt better be playing ONE sport year round or you aren't going to make the cut come high school.  So here we are, dwindling down to wrestling.  Cody wanted to play Lacrosse this Spring, but we talked about it and we (like how I somehow just started playing..lol)  are going to just do soccer and continue with THE WRECKING CREW wrestling, hoping he can then make the high school wrestling team.

NOWWWW, all this being said, I do not think my son is going to become a professional wrestler.  I honestly don't think he will wrestle in college or that ANY high schools or colleges are going to be sending us letters.  I just want him to be able to be on a high school sports team and enjoy the camaraderie of a team sport.

The reason I clarify you ask?  Well, try and sit at any sporting event these days and every freaking parent and grandparent thinks their kid is the next Tiger, Magic or LaBron (sorry for cursing like that).  But it is true!  We were at a wrestling tournament the other day and we're listening to a parent discuss how they are getting letters from schools? YOUR KID IS IN 8TH GRADE??!! What is going on?

Now granted, the high school situation here is NUTS!  Kids go to different schools for high school so that they can play/start whatever sport..it is, dumb dumb dumb.  Seriously, they will go to high school outside of their city so that they can be the starting "whatever" in their sport, it makes my stomach churn!  Now, if Cody were to get a scholarship ($15,000 a year) to go to a private school to wrestle, I'm all for it, but my butt is NOT shipping him an hour away so that he can be "Joe Stud" at his new PUBLIC school?

Do these parents understand the kind of pressure and set-up for failure they are putting on their children? Do they understand that from a community like I live in, maybe one, (1), uno,.. kid in the next 40 years will probably make it to the major leagues?  ONE!!  Wake up and just let you kid have fun.  Just let him be on a team and enjoy excelling.

I hear dads from the bleachers annihilating their kids for not doing this, or doing that.  Gee, I wonder if that kid is having fun? Hmmmm?

But I digress....

So I am a driving lunatic now.  Skylar with dance, "oh, don't you know she will be in Swan Lake on Broadway one day..."  and Emersyn with music.."she will be the next Beyonce if we just keep pushing her..." and Cody with wrestling "oh, I am feeling the next Hulk Hogan?"  ok, well, maybe not the same thing.....

I just want them to have a positive self-image, that's all.  I want them to be able to be on a team and enjoy the camaraderie of riding on that bus to the matches and wear the school sports uniform, IF that is what HE wants.  I don't think he is going to be an Olympic wrestler...unless perhaps we get personal wrestling instruction here at the house...

But I digress....
