Does This Purse Make Me Look Rich?

Yesterday, for something to do, Skylar, Emersyn and I went to the mall.  We entered the mall through Nordstrom, which I usually don't do, but did.  I told Skylar to look around with Emersyn in the kids shoe department while I went to the bathroom.  When I came back I could hear Emersyn squawking and I saw Skylar crouched down and walked over to them.  There was Skylar, Emersyn and the shoe clerk shoving Emersyn's foot into a pair of $89.00 Uggs.  I smiled and asked the price.  The shoe woman replied with a smile.  Skylar shrugged her shoulders and said "aren't they so cute!"  I responded with a smile, "Christmas is coming!" We said thank you and walked into the mall.

Do I pretend that $89.00 for a pair of 2 year old's "fun" boots is normal?  Do I pretend that there's not a chance in Hell that I am buying those when I still have snow boots to buy, Christmas presents to buy....and oh, yes, I still need to pay the mortgage this month.  Let's just get ourselves to the maternity sale rack at the Gap and call it a day already.

On the way out of the mall, Emersyn decided that the perfect place to have a melt down was on our way out of the mall...in Nordstom.  I was feeling completely sick by this point and while she was hitting high C with her mouth by my ear, I told myself that all kids do this and to not let it bother me.  But it did.  I could feel the wealthy, Dolche and Gabanna-clad women starring at me in my awful jeans and old sweatshirt.  Usually if I am going to the mall I try and dress nice, but this was a last minute trip and I wasn't changing, and into what anyway? Nothing fits at this point.

What is it about being in a place like Saks, Norstrom or Bloomingdales that makes you want to stand a little taller and makes you feel funny about your no-name "bag."  And when the hell did we start calling them "bags?"  Weren't they always purses?  Now it's this bag and that bag.  It is like you can see a "rich" person walking a mile away.   Is it the way they carry themselves, or the 900 square foot BAG they are carrying?  Or maybe it is the $1000 stroller they are pushing?  There are so many tells these day and the wealthy people sport them all, so maybe that's how you can tell?

The problem is, the non-rich people want those same "tells" so that they can appear rich.  I call this the Coach-purse syndrome.  Crap outfit, crap shoes, awful hair, god-awful nails and makeup and a Coach purse...the worst.  I think the "E" channel and all the focus we put on celebrities has catapulted the desire for "rich people things" into our society.  The "if I have that, then I will LOOK like I have made it, or have it, or am doing well."  When in all actuality, it is just a purse you carry crap in.  Don't get me wrong, the old Coach purse is quite an investment, I know people who have leather Coach purses that have lasted 20 years, but this is not the Coach that I am speaking of.  I am speaking about the Coach purse with 400 C's on it so EVERYONE knows you spent $300 on the damn thing. Really?

Go to Nordstrom, walk around, the truly rich people you see there are carrying $3000 purses and there isn't a letter on it.  They carry themselves differently and they think nothing of spending $700 on a pair of shoes...and everyone of them are starring at me in my crappy hoodie with my screaming 2 year old, and they are all wondering who let me in this store.

I think I am going to go back to entering the mall through the food court, nobody looks at you funny over there.  Nobody cares if your kid throws herself on the floor and screams blood murder at the top of her 2 year old lungs.  Nobody cares that I didn't put on makeup today.  They probably don't even care if it is my kid that I am taking out of the mall.

I am not judging people that have Coach purses, I have a few of the leather ones, like I said, they last forever.  I am judging people that feel that carrying an expensive "bag" makes them look rich, because when you have chipped nail polish and scuffed shoes, everyone knows...YOU'RE JUST CARRYING A $300 PURSE, anyone can do that if they miss a car payment or two?
