I'll be on Oprah today...well, sort of.

The murder trial that my dad presided over, as Judge, will be on Oprah today.   I got a text on Friday telling me to watch.
It is an interesting case to me because I know the Judge, my dad, I knew the guy that was murdered, Dwayne, and I know a guy that the murderer was friends with.

It is weird to have your dad oversee cases that are so huge.  It is weird to turn on the "E" network and see "Too Young to Kill" and your dad's case is one of them.  That kid killed his mother and attempted to kill his father because he was so engrossed in the Halo video game, he snapped, lost touch with reality and shot them.  Needless to say, this house will never own Halo!

The case that is on Oprah today is a bit different.  This kid stabbed Dwayne Hurley to death after hitting him in the head with a large pickle jar.  He stabbed him 55 times.  The kid said that Dwayne had been sexually molesting him for two years.  He said Dwayne promised he would stop and he didn't.  He said "Dwayne promised."  The kid snapped and the kid killed him.

I watched the trial on Court TV.  I use to work with the prosecutor and I know the defense attorney, the murdered man and I use to know each other when I was in high school.  And today, it is going to be shown to all of the world.

I love watching my dad work, I can't begin to describe how committed he is to the law and doing what is right for everyone.  He knows the law, and he knows that throwing this kid in jail for the rest of his life would have been wrong.  What would you have done?  This kid was being molested by this man, groomed, enticed, and used for years and the kid had enough.  He was only 16 years old and Dwayne threatened to tell people that the kid was gay. In his world, his mind, HE couldn't tell. Poor kid.

If I were to bet, I would say Dwayne had been molesting kids for years.  This wasn't his first, but it was his last.  I feel bad for everyone involved, Dwayne's family, the kid's family, it is all awful.  And today it is going to be on Oprah.  I never thought I would be on Oprah, but I tell my dad and sister all the time, when you are famous, I am famous, because then I get to tell everyone "my dad is the most famous trial judge of all time." which of course makes me really, really cool.

So today, my father's case is going to be on Oprah. I'm claiming it, to bad it wasn't for something a little less awful and sad. Then you would think I was really really cool.

Thanks for reading. Make sure and check out other great stories in the Archives!
