All the crazies at work...and the volcano

My mom tells me that my grandpa would always say, "water seeks it's own lever." which basically means, good will rise to good, bad to bad...etc.

But upon thinking of this harder, and after a conversation or two. Water doesn't just seek it's own level, it insists on it.

We would never even ask water to be anything else BUT water (unless of course we boiled, froze or added something to it). We allow it to be water. We have to go to a great length for water to CHANGE and it never really does, it just morphs for a while.

Why then do we think that a person will ever be anyone but who they are? They may act different for a while, but eventually they will INSIST on being who they are.

You know in your gut when you are around someone different. Sales people are different than IT people, doctors are different than writers, longshoremen are different than lawyers.  How's it go... the lipstick and the pig...we are who we are.

We are not surprised to hear of a movie start dating another movie start, but we all shook our heads when Sandra Bullock married Jesse James...and he eventually went back to his own level.

When lava comes out of a volcano, it works to find it's way back into the Earth and until it does, it isn't level, it isn't stable.

Where are you in life, are you falling to someone else's level or are you dragging people or a person by their little hairs to yours? Are you begging your spouse to rise to your level or are you trudging around at work knowing this isn't where you should be, wishing it would be at your level because that would make life so much easier? (There aren't a whole lot of sane people at the insane asylum, they find each other). Look around.

Realize when you are with people, you can't expect them to be anyone other than who they are. Their SELF will insist on it (remember the volcano)! You can catch them on fire, beat them with a stick or add tea to them and really when it all comes down to it, they are still who they are.

No matter how hard you pull, no matter how low you go, no matter how much you try and be different or wish really really hard to "make it work," it is against nature.

We will rise and fall like the tides, we will explode out of the Earth and make a whole lot of noise at times, and we will add tea to ourselves to try and be different, but in the end, we will find ourselves because we are water, we are made of water, so we will seek our own lever, we will insist on it....
